French drains use perforated pipe surrounded by drainage rock and fabric. They collect water that moves through saturated soil and can help in persistently wet zones. They are useful in the right setting, but they are not a universal answer. A French drain without proper slope, clean rock, fabric protection, and an outlet can fill with sediment and become an expensive buried problem.

Catch basins and solid drain pipe are designed for faster-moving surface water. Set it too low without supporting grading and it may become a small, clogged pond.

Plan Around Irrigation, Trees, and Hardscapes

Drainage and irrigation should never be planned separately. Before changing the landscape, inspect the irrigation system and confirm that zones are not throwing water onto sidewalks, foundations, or low areas.

Maintenance matters because every drainage system collects debris. Catch basins need periodic cleaning. Downspouts need to remain clear. Landscape edging, mulch, and soil should not block swales or drain inlets. A system that works perfectly on installation day can fail after a season of leaves, sediment, and neglected adjustments.

When to Bring in a Drainage Professional
