Avoid using fine crushed limestone, decomposed granite, or gravel mixed with dust. Those materials compact and can clog the voids that let water enter the drain. Washed angular gravel, commonly 3/4-inch size, leaves open space around the pipe for water movement.
Nonwoven landscape fabric is equally important. It separates the soil from the gravel while still allowing water through. Without it, San Antonio clay can migrate into the stone over time and reduce drainage performance. Do not use thin plastic sheeting, which blocks water instead of filtering it.
Dig and Build the Trench
For a typical yard drain, excavate a trench about 8 to 12 inches wide and 12 to 24 inches deep. The proper depth depends on the problem, the required slope, and the outlet elevation. A drain near a foundation should be planned carefully. Do not dig below the foundation footing or remove soil that supports the structure.
Shape the bottom of the trench to the planned grade. It is worth checking the slope several times during digging, because a low point in the trench can trap water and sediment. Continue checking the slope as each section is installed. Connect joints securely so they do not separate during backfill. Include cleanouts at accessible points, especially on long runs or turns, so the pipe can be flushed if debris builds up later.
Cover the pipe with washed gravel until there are at least 4 to 6 inches of stone above it. Fold the excess fabric over the gravel like a burrito, creating a soil barrier around the drainage layer. Then backfill the remaining space with native soil and finish with sod, mulch, or a suitable landscape surface.
Build a Reliable Outlet
The outlet is where many DIY French drains fail. The pipe cannot simply stop underground. Water needs a legal, low-lying place to go. A daylight outlet can extend to a lower area of the yard or a permitted drainage route, with a grated end to keep out animals and large debris. Protect the outlet with stone or erosion-control material if water may flow out quickly during storms.
